Dobrogosz, Walter J. (University of Illinois, Urbana) and Ralph D. DeMoss. Induction and repression of l-arabinose isomerase in Pediococcus pentosaceus. J. Bacteriol. 85:1350-1355. 1963.-The inducible l-arabinose isomerase of Pediococcus pentosaceus can be rapidly and conveniently measured in whole-cell preparations by use of a standard colorimetric procedure originally developed for studies with cell-free enzyme preparations. The enzyme is measured by its ability to catalyze the isomerization of l-arabinose to l-ribulose. Whole cells suspended in a suitable buffer and pretreated with toluene were shown to exhibit this isomerase activity at a level comparable with that observed in cell-free enzyme preparations. Conditions for optimal induction of l-arabinose isomerase are described. In addition, it was determined that the formation of this enzyme is subject to repression by glucose, i.e., via catabolite repression.

Prediction of dynamic metabolic behavior of Pediococcus pentosaceus producing lactic acid from lignocellulosic sugars.

A dynamic metabolic model is presented for Pediococcus pentosaceus producing lactic acid from lignocellulose-derived mixed sugars including glucose, mannose, galactose, arabinose, and xylose. Depending on the pairs of mixed sugars, P. pentosaceus exhibits diverse (i.e., sequential, simultaneous or mixed) consumption patterns. This regulatory behavior of P. pentosaceus is portrayed using the hyb...

Screening and Selection of Wild Strains for L-arabinose Isomerase Production

The majority of L-arabinose isomerases have been isolated by recombinant techniques, but this methodology implies a reduced technological application. For this reason, 29 bacterial strains, some of them previously characterized as L-arabinose isomerase producers, were assayed as L-arabinose fermenting strains by employing conveniently designed culture media with 0.5% (w/v) L-arabinose as main c...

Comparison of diets containing Lactobacilus acidophilus and Pediococcus pentosaceus on growth, hematological and immunological characteristics in juvenile common carp (Cyprinus carpio)

The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of Lactobacillus acidophilus and Pediococcus pentosaceus  on hematological, immunological and growth parameters of common carp (Cyprinus carpio). 180 carp weighted 14±1.44 g were distributed in three treatments. Treatment 1: commercial diets with Lactobacilus acidophilus 1.5g/10Kg (1010CFUg-1), treatment 2: Pediococcus pentosaceus 1.5g/10Kg (1010...

Plasmid DNA in Strains of Pediococcus cerevisiae and Pediococcus pentosaceus.

Five parental strains of Pediococcus were examined for plasmid content. Each strain contained three to six resident plasmids, ranging in size from 4.5 to 39.5 megadaltons. A bacteriocin-like substance produced by Pediococcus cerevisiae FBB63 was tentatively linked to a 10.5-megadalton plasmid after being cured with novobiocin.

Catabolism of serine by Pediococcus acidilactici and Pediococcus pentosaceus.

The ability to produce diacetyl from pyruvate and l-serine was studied in various strains of Pediococcus pentosaceus and Pediococcus acidilactici isolated from cheese. After being incubated on both substrates, only P. pentosaceus produced significant amounts of diacetyl. This property correlated with measurable serine dehydratase activity in cell extracts. A gene encoding the serine dehydratase...
